Allah states in the Holy Qur’an:

“Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?” (Surat ‘Ibrāhīm, Ayah 24)

“I asked Abu `Abdillah (as) about the saying of Allah, “… as a goodly tree, its root set firm, its branches reaching into the sky” (14:24). He said: So he said: The Messenger of Allah  (as) is its root, and Amir al-Mu’mineen (as) is its branches, and the Imams from their progeny are its twigs, and the knowledge of the Imams are its fruits, and their believing Shi`a are its leaves – is there anything more? He said: I said: No, by Allah. He said: By Allah, when a believer gives birth, a leaf sprouts on it; and when a believers dies, a leaf falls from it.”

Sanad: A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Ali ibn Sayf from his father from ‘Amr ibn Harith who has said the above hadith.

If we continue the Surah mentioned, we find a mention of another tree:

“Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky? It produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord. And Allah presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded. And the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, not having any stability.” (14:24-26)

This “bad” tree is perhaps in reference to the cursed tree mentioned in Surah Al-Isra’:

“Behold! We told thee that thy Lord doth encompass mankind round about: We granted the vision which We showed thee, but as a trial for men,- as also the Cursed Tree (mentioned) in the Qur’an: We put terror (and warning) into them, but it only increases their inordinate transgression!” (17:60)

This cursed tree is the Tribe of Bani Ummayyah (la). Tafseer Al-Ayyashi (Volume 2, Pages 320-321 – See Image below) goes into details provided several hadiths from the Prophet (sawa) and Ameer Al-Mu’mineen (as) proclaiming this ayah was revealed upon Bani Ummayyah (la)

Hadith 94 (See Image): Ali Bin Saeed said, ‘I was at Makkah, so Ma’rouf Bin Kharbouz came over and said, ‘Abu Abdullah (as) said to me: ‘Ali (as) said to Umar: ‘O Abu Hafsa! Shall I inform you with what has been Revealed regarding the Clan of Umayya?’ He said, ‘Yes’. He (as) said: ‘So it has been Revealed with regards to them [17:60] “and (likewise) the Cursed tree in the Quran”’. So Umar got angered and said, ‘You are lying! The Clan of Umayya is better than you, and more in maintaining relationships’.

Hadith 99 (See Image): From Abu Tufayl who said, ‘I was in Masjid Al-Kufa, so I heard Alia (as) saying, and he was upon the Pulpit, and Ibn Al-Kawa called out to him, and he was at the back of the Masjid, saying, ‘O Amir-ul-Momineen! Inform me about the Words of Allah [17:60] “and (likewise) the Cursed tree in the Quran”’. So he (as) said: ‘Two obscene ones from the Qureysh, and from the Clan of Umayya’.

However, does this mean all that were born from the Clan of Ummayyah are cursed? Can a righteous person from the decedents of Ummayyah be considered from the Shia?

Sa`d b. `Abd al-Malik entered upon us. Abu Ja`far (as) would call him “Sa`d the Good”, and he was from the sons of `Abd al-`Aziz b. Marwan. He entered upon us whilst Abu Ja`far (as) was present and he began to weep so much just like a woman would weep. Abu Ja`far (as) said to him: Why do you cry, O Sa`d? He said: How can I not cry when I come from the lineage of the cursed tree of the Qur’an? So he (the Imam) said to him: You are not from them, you are an Umayyad from us, the Ahl al-Bayt. Have you not heard the saying of Allah (swt), speaking of Ibrahim? “Whosoever follows me is from me”. (14:36)

Sanad: Abu `Abdillah Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Kufi al-Khazaz from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Sa`eed al-Kufi from ibn Faddal from Isma`il b. Mehran from Abu Masrooq al-Hindi from Malik b. `Atiyya from Abu Hamza who said the above hadith

May we be considered one worthy to be from the Ahlul Bayt (as) and to be a leaf on the tree of the Ahlul Bayt (as).
