When someone who claims to be a Shia disobeys the Imam (as) and goes against his direct orders, the Imam (as) does direct bara’ah / disassociation from that person, to the extent he would make du’a not to be raised with that person in the hereafter.

During the time of necessary Taqiyyah (righteous dissimulation) where the Imams (as) requested for their status and followers to be hidden, the Imam (as) heard of some of the Shia publicising the cause of the Imams and their status as Shia..

‘I heard Abu Abdullah (as) saying: ‘There is a group in the Masjid who publicise us and publicise themselves. They are neither from us nor are we from them. I rush away and hide, but they still uncover my veil. May Allah (swt) violate their veil. They are saying that I am the Imam, but, by Allah, I am not an Imam except for the one who obeys me. So as for the one who disobeys me, I am not an Imam for him. Why are they attaching themselves to my name, and not refraining from mentioning my name from their mouths? By Allah, may He not Gather me and them in one abode’.
