On the anniversary of the demise of Hazrat Abu Taleb (as), 26th Rabi` al-Awwal, we look at three reliable hadiths in al-Kafi and see the status of this great man, despite claims from the Mukhalafeen that he is a kafir (audhubillah).

‘‘The likeness of Abū Tālib is as to the People of the Cave (ashābul-kahf) who kept their faith concealed while displaying polytheism, and Allāh will give them their reward twice.’’

Sanad: Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from Hisham ibn Salim from abu ‘Abd Allah (as) who has said the above hadith

Grading: Allaamah al-Majlisi (rh) says the chain is Hasan/Good (حسن) [Mira’at al-Uqool, Volume 5, Page 253 (See Second Image below)]

Ja‘far, that his father, peace be upon him, said: ‘‘Someone said to him: ‘They claim that Abū Tālib was an unbeliever.’ He said: ‘They lie: how could he be an unbeliever when he said: ‘‘Did you not know that we have found Muhammad, A prophet like Moses described in the beginning of the scriptures.’’ ’ ’’
In another Tradition: ‘‘How could Abū Taālib be an unbeliever when he said:
‘They know that our son is not held a liar by us,
And is not concerned with foolish falsehood.
The bright faced one, for whose sake the clouds drop rain,
The support of orphans, the defence of widows.’ ’’

Sanad: Al-Husayn ibn Muhammad and Muhammad ibn Yahya have narrated from Ahmad ibn Ishaq from Bakr ibn Muhammad al-Azdi from Ishaq ibn Ja‘far from his father, recipient of divine supreme covenant, who has said the above

Here is a hadith showing the immense love Abu Taleb (as) had for the Prophet (sawa). Many narrate this story only half way and do not go to the full details on how Abu Taleb (as) retaliated along with the Lion of Allah and Uncle of the Prophet (sawa), Hamzah:

‘‘Once when the Prophet, may the blessing and peace of Allāh be upon him and his descendants, was in the Holy Mosque of Makkah, and had on him new clothes, [a group of] polytheists threw upon him the contents of a she-camel’s stomach, and his clothes were completely covered in it. He became angry at this to the extent that Allāh wished, and went to Abū Tālib and said to him: ‘O my paternal uncle, how am I esteemed among you [the Banū Hāshim].’ He said to him: ‘What is this to do with, O son of my brother?’ He told him what had happened, so Abū Tālib called for Hamzah, and took his sword and said to Hamzah: ‘Bring the she-camel’s stomach.’ Then he went to the group, the Prophet being with him; he reached Quraysh while they were around the Ka‘bah. When they saw him, they perceived the evil [that had been done] from his face. Then he said to Hamzah: ‘Wipe the she-camel’s stomach on their moustaches.’ He did this till he reached the last one of them. Then Abū Tālib turned to the Prophet, may the blessing and peace of Allāh be upon him and his descendants, and said: ‘O son of my brother, this is how you are esteemed among us.’ ’’

Regarding the Taqiyyah of Abu Taleb (as), I would like to relate one hadith which reminds me of him. Often we feel certain individuals have not gotten the honour they recieve because they have had to use Taqiyyah and hide the inner essence of their splendor. There are two variations of the hadith:

Amirul Mo’mineen, Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon him, told his followers: Be among people like a honeybee among the birds. For every quality that a bird has (like flight and speed), it considers the bee as weak; but if the birds know what blessings the bees carry in their stomach, they would not have treated them such. Mix up with the people with your tongues and your bodies (i.e. in appearance), but disassociate from them with your hearts and your deeds. Every soul shall have what it earns, and on the Day of Judgement, he will be with the one he loved.”

Sanad: He said: Abu Bakr Muhammad b. Umar al-Jea’bi reported from Abu Ali al-Husain b. Muhammad al-Kindi, who reported from Amru b. Muhammad al-Harith, who reported from his father Muhammad b. al-Harith, who reported from al-Sabah b. Yahya al- Muzni, from al-Harith b. Husayrah, from his father who said the above hadith

“Protect your religion and veil it with al-Taqiyyah (protective measures); one who does not observe al-Taqiyyah has no belief.
You in the people are like honeybees, in birds. Had birds known what is inside honeybees no honeybee would have been left and it all would have been consumed. Had people known that you love Ahl al-Bayt they might have destroyed you with their tongues, abusing you in private and in public. May Allah bless those of you who are in our Walayah (Divine Guardianship).’”

Sanad: Abu Ali al-Ash’ari has narrated from al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Kufi from al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Amir from Jabir al-Makfuf from ‘Abd Allah ibn abu Ya’fur from abu ‘Abd Allah (as) who has said the above hadith
