Aba Abdillah or Abu Ja’far (as) said: When a child reaches the age of three it is said to him to repeat seven times: “La illaha ill-Allah” (There is no deity other than Allah);
Then he is left until he reaches the age of three years and seven months and twenty days so it is said to him to say seven times: “Muhammadan Rasool-Allah” (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah);
Then he is left until he reaches the age of four then it is said to him to say: “Sal-Allah `ala Muhammad wa Alehi” (Blessings of Allah upon Muhammad and his Family);
Then he is left until he reaches the age of five and it is said to him: “Where is your right, and where is your left?”, so when he knows (to differentiate them) then he should face towards the qibla and be said to him: “Asjud” (Prostrate);
Then he is left until he reaches six years of age, so when he reaches six years he prays and learns al-rukoo` (Bowing) and al-sujood (Prostration);
Then he is left until he reaches seven years of age, so when he reaches seven years, say to him: “Wash your face and your arms”, so when he washes them say to him: “Sallee” (Pray);
Then he is left until he reaches the age of nine years, so when he completes his understanding of al-wadhoo’ (ablution) he performs them, and the ordering of al-salaah (prayers) he performs them – and the one who learns al-wadhoo’ and al-salaah, Allah forgives the parents (who taught him) if Allah the Majestic wills.”
