We commonly hear the hadith: “Ali is with the Truth, and the Truth is with Ali, May Allah have mercy upon ‘Ali. O Allah! Place the truth with him wherever he turns.” which is found in both Shia and Sunni sources, however we now look at a variant hadith – The first found in both Shia and Authentic Sunni Sources:

The Servant of Abu Dharr said, I was present with Imam Ali (as) on the day of Jamal, but when I saw Aisha standing, doubt entered my heart has just like it entered into some other peoples hearts. When I saw the sun Allah relieved that from me, so I fought with the prince of the faithfuls (as). After that, I went to Al-Madeenah to visit Om Salamah (ra), the wife of the Prophet (sawa) and said: “By Allah I have not come for food nor drink, But I am the servant of Abu Dharr.”  I told her my story so she said: ” What did you do when hearts aloft and flew”? I said: “The best and all Praise is due to Allah, Allah has relieved that doubt from me at sun fall” Om Salamah (ra) said: “Bravo, I heard the messenger of Allah (sawa) saying: “Ali is with the Qur’an and the Qur’an is with Ali, and they will not separate until they return to me at the pond.””

The Servant of Abu Dharr said, I heard Om Salamah (ra) say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sawa) say during in his sickness which led to his demise infront of his companions: “Oh People, death is fast approaching me, so I present to you words of warning – I leave to succeed me amongst you the Book of Allah (swt) and my Progeny the Ahlul-Bayt (as).”
Then he took the hadn of Ali (as) and raised it and said: “This Ali is with the Qur’an and the Qur’an is with Ali – Two successors, both seeing, and they will not separate until they meet me at the pond, where I ask them about what I left for them (to be an authority over as Khalifah).”
